Daanamaya Pinkam

Daanamaya pinkam are usually held as a blessing. It is done on a child’s first birthday, at a child’s first reading ceremony, wedding anniversaries, pregnancies, birthday celebrations, office openings, or any other occasion where you wish to receive blessings. Dharma Deshana Pinkam are given to enlighten the mind of a person in case of illness or near death and to give merit to a person who has passed away.

It can usually take a few hours as it consists of a sermon as well as offering food to the priests. The daanaya can either be heel daanaya or dahaval daanaya.

During the Daanamaya pinkama you would need to be suitably attired and seated in your homes with minimum noise so that you can listen to the sermon in a calm setting. You will also need a large bowl, a smaller bowl that be kept inside the large bowl and a tea pot filled with water for pan wadeema.

The session will start with the priest being invited to commence the sermon. Flowers, a lit lamp and josticks will be offered to Lord Buddha. Prayers will be said and then the sermon will be delivered. Towards the end of first part of the sermon, while the priest chants a prayer you will be expected the pour water from the tea pot slowly into the small bowl until it overflows. The excess water will be collected in the larger bowl. This is to signify the merit that is being collected from this activity.

At the end of the first part of the sermon, the priests will be offered the daanaya. It will consist of a drink, main meal and fruit/sweets.

After the priests have consumed the daanaya, the second part of the sermon will begin to pin anumodam for the meal that was offered.

At the end of the daanaya a special gift pirikara will be offered as thanks to the priest.
